Full Review of the Breville Twin Motor Stand Hand Mixer SHM2
At first sight the Breville Twin Motor Stand and Hand Mixer SHM2 looks quite conventional, but the twin motors mean that not only do the beaters turn but so does the bowl, making mixing more even. It is small in size for a traditional stand mixer, but this means that the business end can also be used as a hand mixer, which is a very useful feature. The SHM2 comes complete with a dough hook, beaters and a spatula.
Whats the Breville Twin Motor Stand and Hand like to use?
I suppose I shouldnt have been surprised that two motors make twice the noise of one, but the Breville Twin Motor Stand and Hand Mixer SHM2 really very loud indeed. I couldnt hear the phone when it was working and usually the only gadget that drowns the phone out is the vacuum cleaner. The other problem I immediately encountered with the Breville Twin Motor is that it wont really work with smallish amounts Im talking a couple of eggs, that kind of quantity. They spin round with the bowl, but the beaters are above them and do nothing. I know this machine is sold as a hand mixer as well, but I want to choose whether I use it by hand, rather than have the machine choose for me! It isnt very good with foods that start off dry, either. After a disastrous pastry experience with the Mixer I squashed the butter down into the flour by hand in advance the next time, but that rather makes a mixer redundant. By the time youve done that, its practically pastry already!
This design needs work
I have not enjoyed owning this mixer very much. I have got to know what the Breville Twin Motor Mixer SHM2 is good at and when to leave it on the shelf. For example, I make my own ice cream using the meringue method and for whipping four egg whites stiffly and then gently folding in the cream this machine is a whizz. For most other applications, the Breville Twin Motor Stand and Hand Mixer SHM2 isnt really good enough to make it worth getting out and using. Because I hardly use it, except for light soft ingredients like egg white, I have had no trouble with the gears stripping, but I have heard that this is an issue because they are made of plastic. This seems like a bit of a cheap choice for what is after all a reasonably expensive piece of kit, as hand mixers go.
Why did I buy the Breville Twin Motor Stand and Hand?
The Breville Twin Motor Mixer looks good, you cant deny. It sits neatly on a work surface in a small kitchen although mine has been relegated to a shelf and does double duty as a handmixer as well as a stand one. I rather pictured myself using it all the while, but after the redecorating the kitchen with flour and butter in the pastry incident I use the Twin Motor Stand and Hand Mixer less and less. I have a feeling it may be appearing at a local car boot before too long. The best price we could find it for is £49.99 from Comet. Open the Comet Online Store here to see this deal.
