What does the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer Blue do?

Anything that needs mixing, from dough to egg whites is at home in the huge bowl of the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer Blue. At just under 5 litres capacity it is not the largest on the market but it is more than adequate for a huge batch bake and to my mind it makes a better job of kneading dough than any bread maker. The KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer Blue is not designed to blend in, so I have made a feature of mine and it stands very proudly on the work surface and is admired by everyone.

Even the staunchest non-cook can find something to like in the design features, from the sliding speed control to the classic lift-back head. One thing that I really love about the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer Blue is the handles on the bowl. I know that may sound a bit of a minor point to enthuse about but anyone who has tried to wrestle a large stainless steel bowl off a mixer when their hands are all buttery will know just what I mean!

Its a bit big!

That is a plus as far as I can see. The KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer Blue is solid and doesnt wander around the work top as it mixes. A friend of mine who bought a cheap (light) mixer turned round one day just in time to see it fling itself of the work top it was only the power cord that stopped it hitting the floor! You would never get that problem with the KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer Blue, which weighs a nice chunky 24lbs and isnt going anywhere you dont want it to.

The designers at KitchenAid have made a virtue of the size by making it in bright colours which are part of a kitchens decor. There is now a large range of other equipment in the range so if you want you could have a whole set of everything you need in red or pink, black and the rest. The KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer Blue is often the first bit of kit you buy in the range, but it probably wont be the last.

Everyone says you should leave equipment out if you are going to use it and the Kenwood kMix KMX50 Food Mixer is certainly easy enough on the eye. I have had a lot of people notice it, thats certain, from the grocery delivery man to the postman and they all like its looks. The name Kenwood conjures up an expensive, top of the range mixer which has to live on the worktop as it is so huge. The Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324 is a neat little thing that has all the build quality that the name implies, but without the size or the pretty hefty price tag.

The Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324 in use

The Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324 has a really nifty innovation which I have never seen before on a hand mixer and it solves a problem that I have always moaned about. It has a spring clip to store the beaters when the mixer is not in use so when you find your Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324 in the cupboard, you have found your beaters as well. It wont save me years of my life, but it will certainly stop me moaning about it.

This mixer is easy to use and light on the hand. It did develop a bit of shake on the top speed, but I liked the slower one; it was just right for folding flour or melted chocolate without covering you from head to foot as some of the more powerful mixers can do. The fastest speed of the Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324 is more than ample for whipping egg whites. The dough hooks are quite well designed and on the lowest speed the Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324 mixes wholemeal breads nicely without breaking up all the good bits.

Black is back in the kitchen

For a while, all kitchen equipment came in black and it was not a good finish to keep clean, showing finger marks and flour alike. The Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324 however has been finished in a keep clean black which is easy to wipe and restore back to its new look shine, with no finger marks. Speaking personally, I am not much bothered by the off fingerprint in my kitchen, but if you buy a glossy black gadget, it is nice to know that it will stay that way, so thanks Kenwood for giving some thought to that.

Ergonomics and other design thoughts

The Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324 has quite a small hole for the handle, but then I have quite small hands, so I dont care. There is a shaped grip which again I seem to be the right shape for, but you should hear my son and husband whinge. Perhaps Kenwood werent thinking about the men when they designed the handle of the Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324. Other design features are great, though including the already mentioned clip for holding the beaters or dough hooks in storage. That is such a great idea and should be found more often.

Recommending the Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324

I already have recommended the Kenwood Black Three Speed Hand Mixer HM324, to a friend whose daughter is off to college and to another one who has just had a funky minimalist kitchen installed. The Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794 is part of the Kenwood range of co-ordinated kitchen equipment and comes in a variety of colours which are unusual and striking, such as almond and raspberry. The styling is quite retro, putting you in mind of Thirties Deco with the clean curved line. The body is made of die-cast aluminium, which makes it really sturdy so it isnt all about looks. The Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794 comes with beaters and dough hooks and has a non slip handle and a flat end that makes it easy to put down.

It looks good what about performance?

It is true that the first thing you notice about the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794 is its unusual styling and also the fact that it isnt boring old white or chrome. But it does perform well also, and the fact that it is slightly heavier than you might expect does make it much less prone to the dreadful shake that many hand mixers suffer from. This makes the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794 much more comfortable to use than many lighter mixers, although if you do have weaker than average wrists this might not be the one for you. I found the extra weight to be a positive advantage when kneading bread, as the hooks didnt get stuck and start moving me around instead of the dough, which I have known happen with mixers less sturdy than the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794.

Good design features

Kenwood designers usually think of a little extra something and in this case it is the flat back (or base, depending how you look at it) of the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794, in matching material to the handle. It makes it very easy to put down without the beaters touching the work surface, which is very handy if you are making something that needs additional ingredients to be added. It makes for a very stable product my previous mixer had to be leant against something or it fell over. Could that be why it didnt last too long? The handle of the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794 is well designed and part of the ergonomic smooth lines of the mixer. There is room for manly knuckles between the handle and the body of the mixer and this is rarely found men like making cakes as well and not many manufacturers remember that, it seems.

Would I recommend the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794

I have a friend who covets my lovely black Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794 but she has arthritis and cant really manage anything as heavy as this. If you think your grip is weaker than average, then it might be worth checking first before you buy. But if you have no problems with slightly weightier than usual gadgets, then the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794 would be a good buy. The motor is nice and quiet, if you like to listen to the radio while you are cooking and there is a nice solid feel to the whole thing which makes the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM794 a pleasure to use. Cooking with a style icon

There is something very reassuring about the Kenwood Classic Major. It has six speeds and a pulse facility, but otherwise it comes free of most of the added gizmos that can add so much to the price and not much to the usability of other mixers. The Kenwood Classic Major has a useful splash guard, but with the variable speed it is not that vital as the large bowl keeps most mixtures where they are meant to be in the bowl. For long jobs like kneading dough, the Kenwood Classic Major can be left to do its thing without wandering over the work surface like some lighter machines, which is a bonus because watching bread being kneaded is not the most fascinating way to spend your time in the kitchen.

Are there any problems?

The Kenwood Classic Major isnt called a classic for nothing. It is one of those kitchen gadgets which do pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. The beaters reach to the sides and bottom of the bowl very well this is often a real glitch with big mixers if you are only making an ordinary amount of cake mix, say, or bread. The Kenwood Classic Major has only six speeds, but that is fine, each one is perfect for something, the slow speed in particular being good for bread. Other Kenwood attachments for the Kenwood Classic Major are available so this would be a good mixer for someone who was keen on cooking but was unsure quite how far their interest was going to take them. Many promising cooks have fallen at the first fence, often completely overwhelmed by a too-gadgetty mixer or food processor. When you get used to using it, you wont need to look at the instruction book (which is quite easy to understand and use; a bonus) because you will know instinctively what speed is needed for what task.

Would I recommend to a friend?

I think the Kenwood Classic Major would be welcome in any kitchen. As a bit of a bit piece of kit it isnt something you would want to lug out of a cupboard too often and so you would need a reasonable run of worktop for it to be out of the way when it wasnt in use. The secret with all kitchen equipment though is to have it handy, otherwise it doesnt get used, and as the Kenwood Classic Major can do so many baking preparation tasks so well and easily, you probably wouldnt want to put it away anyway.

This mixer is considered by many to be the natural follower to the old Chef range and certainly the styling is retro enough for all those who hanker after the old machines. The Kenwood kMix KMX54 Food Mixer comes with up to the minute non stick beaters and a very much quieter motor than long-term Kenwood aficionados may remember.

Using the Kenwood kMix KMX54 Food Mixer

The Kenwood kMix KMX54 Food Mixer comes with a limited range of accessories, but you can buy others that fit either at the beater connection point or at the rear, where the slower speed connector can be found. These include a pasta maker (both extruder and roller) and others such as a grinder for meat. The Kenwood kMix KMX54 Food Mixer should really be considered as a top of the range, heavy duty mixer for someone who makes a lot of a few things; one application would be a small kitchen for perhaps a tea room. Anyone who was venturing into cooking hoping to become more adventurous still would possibly become a little frustrated by the limitations of the Kenwood kMix KMX54 Food Mixer.

I am a bit of a mad cake maker, personally, so for me this machine is perfect. Its large 5 litre bowl is ample for even the largest batch bake and there is plenty of room for bread to rise if you leave it in the bowl to do its thing.

Essentially, the Kenwood kMix KMX54 Food Mixer is a well designed mixer, with a bit of extra visual va va voom.

Would I recommend it?

As long as you dont need to put it away far too heavy to lug about the Kenwood kMix KMX54 Food Mixer would be a great mixer for all but the most unwilling cook. Everyone says you should leave equipment out if you are going to use it and the Kenwood kMix KMX54 Food Mixer is certainly easy enough on the eye. I have had a lot of people notice it, thats certain, from the grocery delivery man to the postman and they all like its looks. It is smaller than most stand mixers and has a very impressive array of accessories, including liquidiser, food processor, citrus juicer, slicing plates and the usual beaters and dough hooks. For a smaller mixer, the Kenwood Prospero Compact Food Mixer KM265 certainly is versatile.

What can it do?

The Kenwood Prospero Compact Food Mixer KM265 is a perfect mixer for the cook who wants to have a bit of a go at everything, because with all its attachments it really does offer a lot of options for using it every day. I liked the slicing discs particularly; it is unusual to find them with a mixer of this style and certainly of this price, which was very reasonable.
