Full Review of the Kenwood kMix HM792
The Kenwood kMix Hand Mixers are some of the most stylish and powerful hand mixers on the market today. The question is, is there more substance to these mixers than just the flashy design and strong engine?
What do you get for your money?
The Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer HM792 has a cast aluminium body that feels robust and solid in your hand but isnt too heavy to hold for longer periods of time. Inside the body, which comes in red, black and almond, is a very powerful 400W motor. There is something to be said about hand mixers with 400W motors as this rivals some of the stand mixers on the market.
Along with the motor unit you get the standard stainless steel twin beater and twin kneader attachments which can be put in the dishwasher. Great!
This Kenwood Hand Mixer also comes with a nifty little stand for easy storage which does require a bit of cord manipulation to use in the first place but once mastered, it is pretty handy. The idea is that you can leave the mixer on your work surface as it is poised and at the ready for the next recipe.
So what about the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixers performance?
As far as the speed settings are concerned, this mixer has 5 settings that are all well spaced and all useful for different tasks. The slow setting is actually slow which is great when you want to fold in mixture without creating a dust storm in the kitchen. The rubber grip on the handle means that it will stay in your hands and the buttons are cleverly placed for fingertip operation.
In addition to the 5 speed settings there is also the option to use this mixer on pulse mode which makes it easy to control your mixing down to the very last second. I find this especially useful in getting the perfect consistency when whipping cream and mixing egg whites to form soft peaks. Watch out Yorkshire Puddings!
Despite its power the motor is actually really quiet which is an excellent attribute in any mixer. I like to listen to the radio when Im cooking and some mixers just completely drown out the sound altogether.
The beaters have a very good shape which really aids the mixing process and not only makes it faster but also makes sure you get fantastic consistencies in your batters and mixtures.
Are there any downsides to the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer?
The weight of the kMix Hand Mixer may be a concern for people that suffer from conditions such as arthritis as it is a little heavier than some of the other cheap and cheerful models on the market.
I have not had a great experience with kneading dough as the kneaders tend to battle with 500g of flour and yeast which is the typical amount for a loaf. The dough tends to travel up the hooks as opposed to being gently mixed in together. I had to stop and scrape the dough out of the hooks quite regularly which is a bit disappointing.
Would I recommend the Kenwood kMix Hand Mixer?
In a word: Yes! Unless money is an issue you are not going to get a better hand mixer than this one. The only better mixing experience you can get is from a stand mixer which is not ideal for everyones style of cooking. Go for it, I promise you wont be disappointed. This mixer really beats my old mixer hands down. It is quiet yet has a very powerful motor. I have used it on many occasions rather than my Kitchenaid mixer.
The reason that I didn’t give it a 5 star rating is that it advertised storage for the lead which I thought was a plus. The drawback is that the lead takes about a fourth of the space and you are left with excess.
